Barry joined GSA in 2001 after five years as Senior Investment Officer of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) Alternative Investment Management Program, where he was responsible for managing the Alternative Investment and Private Equity portfolios. During his tenure at CalPERS, he built the program from $1.4 billion invested to $9 billion invested and $19 billion of commitments. Previously, he spent a decade with The Travelers Companies, where he managed private equity investments, served as Director of Research for Travelers Common Stock Group, and was responsible for the foreign investment portfolio. At Connecticut Mutual, Barry served as Senior Investment Officer responsible for Alternative Investments and Private Equity placements, initiated a private equity program and completed the organization's first direct venture capital, mezzanine debt and partnership transactions.
Undergraduate degree in Economics from Vassar College and an MBA from the University of North Carolina.
